How to Compress a GIF for Discord (8 MB Limit, 2026)
Discord caps free uploads at 8 MB. Here's the exact recipe — width, FPS, frame count — that fits every time, with no quality nightmare.

The 8 MB rule
Discord won't let free accounts upload anything over 8 MB. Nitro raises it, but most servers have plenty of free users — so you should always compress with the 8 MB cap in mind.
Open the GIF compressor, drop your file in, and click the "Discord 8MB" smart-fit button. The tool will auto-tune width, frame stride, and palette until your GIF fits. That usually takes 5–15 seconds.
Why smart-fit beats manual
Manual compression means you guess: drop FPS to 12, scale to 320px, re-encode, check size, repeat. Smart-fit runs a binary-search loop on three knobs at once — scale, frame stride, palette quality — and stops the second the file fits. You skip 4–6 manual rounds.
The recipe (if you want to do it manually)
For most GIFs that are slightly over 8 MB, this works:
- Width: 320–400 px (down from 480 or 640)
- FPS: 12 (rarely worse-looking than 15)
- Frames: cut to ≤ 60 (≈ 5 seconds at 12 fps)
- Colors: leave at 256, drop only as a last resort
Use the trim & cut tools first
The single biggest size win is removing frames you don't need. On the compressor, the Trim · Cut · Skip panel lets you:
- Trim ends — keep only frames 12–48 of a 60-frame clip.
- Cut middle — drop the boring loop section in the middle.
- Keep every 2nd / 3rd / 4th frame — instant 50% / 67% / 75% size cut.
These cost zero quality if the dropped frames are visually similar to the ones around them, which is true for most loops.
If 8 MB still isn't enough
Sometimes a GIF just has too much going on — fast motion, lots of color variation, no obvious frames to cut. Two things to try:
- AI background removal — a transparent GIF compresses way better than one with a busy background. Try it on the transparent GIF tool.
- Drop to 240px width. Discord scales GIFs in chat anyway, and 240px in a thread looks fine.
Discord stickers vs Discord GIFs
If you're making a sticker instead of a chat GIF, the rules change: 320×320, 512 KB, APNG format. Use the sticker pack builder for that instead — it handles APNG export automatically.
FAQ
- What is the GIF size limit on Discord?
- Free Discord accounts can upload files up to 8 MB. Discord Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB; Nitro to 500 MB. The 8 MB number is the one most people are hitting.
- Does Discord auto-compress my GIF?
- No. Discord rejects the file outright if it's over the limit — it never re-encodes. You have to compress before uploading.
- Why does my 5 MB GIF look worse than a friend's 5 MB GIF?
- Two GIFs of the same size can look very different depending on FPS, color count, and dimensions. Lower FPS + smaller dimensions usually beats lower color count for visual quality.
